ESL students working together

Information on Technology Support for Students can be found here.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Our school will be offering in-person ESL classes at all levels (Beginning Literacy to Advanced) starting August 24. We offer 6 levels of basic English instruction at the Adult School in the morning (9:00AM-12:00PM) and evening (6:00PM-9:00PM). We also have classes at the Beginning High to Advanced Low levels in the afternoon (12:30PM-3:30PM). Regular attendance is required for all ESL classes.

If you have completed the ESL program at another California Adult School, you have taken many years of English classes as part of your elementary and secondary education (6 or more), or you have taken college or university classes in your country or the USA, our classes will not meet your needs. Please DO NOT sign up for testing as you will not get a place in a class. Please visit our partner colleges (fhda.edu or foothill.edu) for more advanced ESL options. We cannot offer classes to students who are visiting California for short-term stays.

New students will be required to take a placement test on Wednesday, October 6 (9:00 AM, 12:30PM, or 6:00PM). You must register for the test in advance and test registration will be open starting September 15. Questions can be directed to mvlaeslprogram@gmail.com or 650 940-1333.

No walk-ins will be allowed for testing. Everyone who comes to our school must wear a mask the whole time. Please do not bring any children into the school.  November 3 will be an additional testing date.

CITIZENSHIP PREPARATION

This fall there will be two options for U.S. Citizenship Preparation classes: one online and one in person.

Thursdays, 12:30PM-3:30PM: IN PERSON at MVLA Adult School – starting Aug 26

Mondays, 6:00PM-9:00PM: ONLINE (via Zoom) – starting Aug 30

There is no test for joining Citizenship class, but you should be a permanent resident eligible for U.S. citizenship and be planning to send your application in the next year or so. The class is taught at an Intermediate English level. Please contact mvlaeslprogram@gmail.com or 650 940-1333 if you are interested in signing up for either class.
