ESL and Citizenship

ESL students working together

English as a Second Language (ESL)

  • New students - must take a placement test on Wednesday, November 2. Students must pre-register for placement test (see ESL Placement Test Registration instructions below). No walk-ins are allowed for testing.
  • New Senior Center Students - must take a placement test on Friday, November 4 at the senior center. Please call 650-940-1333 or register in person at MVLA Adult School. 
  • If you are interested in taking either of the November placement tests, please contact the school to be added to an “interest list.”

ESL Placement Test Registration


Mountain View and Los Altos residents have priority.
 
MOUNTAIN VIEW and LOS ALTOS RESIDENTS can sign up for the test starting Wednesday, October 19
To register for the ESL placement test, students must register during school hours (M-Th, 8:00 am - 9:00 pm; F, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm). Students must register in-person at school (333 Moffett Blvd, Mountain View) or by phone (650-940-1333). Space is limited.  
 
RESIDENTS OF ALL OTHER CITIES can sign up for the test starting Monday, October 24
To register for the ESL placement test, students must register during school hours (M-Th, 8:00 am - 9:00 pm; F, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm). Students must register in-person at school (333 Moffett Blvd, Mountain View) or by phone (650-940-1333). Space is limited.  
 
If you are interested in taking the next placement test, please contact the school to be added to an “interest list.” No walk-ins are allowed for testing. Please do not bring any children on the day of testing.

Students should not sign up for testing if they:
  • completed the highest levels of ESL at another adult school or college
  • have taken six or more years of English classes as part of your elementary or secondary education
  • are visiting California for a short-term stay
 
These students should visit MVLA's partner colleges for more advanced ESL options.

There is no test for joining Citizenship class, but students should be permanent residents eligible for U.S. citizenship and plan to send an application in the next year. Students interested in signing up for Citizenship can contact mvlaeslprogram@gmail.com or 650-940-1333.
