ESL students working together

English as a Second Language (ESL)

ESL Placement Test Registration
All new ESL students must take a placement test in person. Mountain View and Los Altos residents have priority. Residents of other cities will be accommodated if there is space. Students must pre-register for the test in person at MVLA Adult School (333 Moffett Blvd, Mountain View). It is not possible to register over the phone. Space is limited. No walk-ins are allowed for testing. Please do not bring any children on the day of testing. Students must be available to stay for the whole testing period.

ALL ESL PLACEMENT TESTS IN MARCH ARE NOW FULL. We do not have any additional tests scheduled at this time. Please check our website on May 1, 2024* to learn about our next placement test.

*Please note: May 1 is not a day for registration or testing. It is only a date when we will be announcing the next placement test information.

Questions can be directed to mvlaeslprogram@gmail.com or 650-940-1333.

Students should not sign up for testing if they:
  • completed the highest levels of ESL at another adult school or college
  • have taken six or more years of English classes as part of their elementary or secondary education
  • are visiting California for a short-term stay

These students should visit MVLA's partner colleges for more advanced ESL options.
